Understanding Your Stress Patterns (And How to Work With Them)

Stress Is Not the Enemy

Stress is your body trying to keep you safe. The problem isn’t the stress itself — it’s getting stuck in one pattern.
Most people default to one of these:

Fight – irritability, tension, urgency
Flight – overworking, overthinking, rushing
Freeze – numbness, shutdown, exhaustion
Fawn – people-pleasing, over-accommodating, difficulty saying no

Recognizing your dominant pattern is the first step toward shifting it.

Why Stress Patterns Become Habitual

Your brain loves familiarity, even when it’s uncomfortable. Stress patterns often form:

• In childhood
• During traumatic or overwhelming experiences
• When your nervous system tries to keep you safe by predicting danger

They are coping strategies — not character flaws.

Tools to Support Regulation

Grounding Through the Senses
Look around the room and name 5 things you can see.
This pulls you out of the mind and back into the body.

Box Breathing
Inhale 4 • Hold 4 • Exhale 4 • Hold 4
This signals safety to your nervous system.

Somatic Micro-Movements
Shoulder rolls, shaking out the hands, stretching — movement releases stored tension.

Name What’s Happening
“I’m feeling overwhelmed. My body is trying to protect me.”
Awareness reduces the intensity.

You’re Not Supposed to Handle Stress Alone

With coaching, you learn your patterns, understand your emotional cues, and build tools that help you return to balance with more ease and clarity.
